UNIVERSITY OF THE PELOPONNESE

INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL

Greek culture in a modern light:

Formulating a research agenda within the Peloponnese

In July 2012 the University of the Peloponnese is going to initiate an international programme focusing on Greek culture as teaching stimulus and research challenge. This programme will take place in the form of a summer school and aims at creating an ongoing collaboration between the University of the Peloponnese and Universities worldwide with an interest in Greek culture.

By applying Greek heritage as a research channel, the programme will provide a group of lectures on various fields of Greek studies, such as sport and the Olympic ideal, classical drama, performance and the reception of Greek culture. Modern methodological approaches will be applied, such as new technology based presentations in the International Olympic Academy, in combination with field trips connecting text with place. Within this context, a series of visits will be made to guide students through cultural and archaeological sites with a special emphasis in the region of the Peloponnese. Additionally, the resources of the International Olympic Academy in Olympia will provide significant aid for further reading.

The dynamics of Greek culture aim at providing the opportunity for a collaborative interdisciplinary and innovative research, at presenting Greek Classics in a modern perspective, as well as opening new investigative areas to students. The programme will serve as a platform of discussion, exchange of knowledge among students and promotion of Greek culture worldwide.

Application Deadline: 31 March 2012
